First Sentinels of the Frozen SouthDecember 10th 1772 Oil on canvas 20" x 40" (51 cm x 101.5 cm) In the collection of the late Ray Chandler. In the night it had been snowing and in the early hours, Cook ordered the Adventure to take the lead. At 6am, they saw their first ice. The wind abating, they loosed all reefs out of the topsails. |
